Brooch/Pendant, Cameo

Brooch/Pendant, Cameo Quantity in Basket:none
Code: EJ1144
Price: $350.00
Shipping Weight: 2.00 pounds
Quantity:
Late 19th Century cameo brooch/pendant combination, typical of the era. Fine Italian carved shell cameo with profile of lovely woman with Greco/Roman hairdo and grape cluster at the shoulder of her draped gown. Cameo is bezel set in 12 karat rolled gold pendant with hinged bail which folds down when worn as a brooch. The cameo is hand carved of shell, with a pale carmel colored background into the creamy white high relief carving. The cameo bezel is outlined with very tiny round beads which appear to be amazonite strung on pale green silk thread. Brooch pin is hand-made and the catch is simple fold-over with no safety catch. Overall size of the piece is 1-7/8" long (with bail extended) x 1-3/16" wide. An outstanding example of the cameo carver's art. Will be shipped gift boxed.

Shell has been used for cameos since the Renaissance (15th and 16th Centuries). The first cameos were carved from mussel or cowrie shells, and generally were white on a grey background. In the mid 18th Century, new shell varities, such as helmet shells from the West Indies, and queen conch shells from the Bahamas were imported into Europe and sparked renewed interest in shell cameo jewelry. Today, fine cameo carvings, especially from Italian artisans, are finding favor with top designers, and the sources for the best conch shell are South Africa and Madagascar.
