Peridot (pronounced pair ah doe) is the traditional gemstone for August, with a secondary choice of sardonyx, which is a banded agate usually colored carmel and white and often carved into cameos. Carnelian is a form of sardonyx, being all carmel colored. Many August babies profess a dislike of peridot, due to the washed out gems usually seen. These peridot are bright and strongly colored.
